Personal Statement

I am a student at Imperial College London studying for an MSc in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. My final year undergraduate project, ‘fold’, is an R based tool to analyse methylation patterns in hairpin-bisulphite treated DNA sequences and can be found at www.gregoryleeman.com/fold.

  • Took a variety of modules in the school of Biosciences and Computer Science, including: endocrinology, immunology, genetics, data modelling, database management, image analysis, artificial intelligence and information visualisation.
  • Undertook projects utilising Python, R, PHP, SQL and JavaScript (d3.js).
  • Awarded the ‘Lambing’ award for the best dissertation in the topic of Animal Physiology for my final year project ‘fold’.
2016:

Certificate of required training for personal working under ASPA (Mouse and Rat)

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge

  • Worked within a small team to care for hundreds of mice as part of the Mouse Genome Project.
  • Operated in a professional, bio-controlled environment to industry standards.
2015-17:

Pie Salesman

Brockleby’s Pies, Melton Mowbray

  • Drove to farmers markets and food festivals across the UK to sell handmade pies to the general public.
2016:

Biosciences KTN and BSAS Vacation Scholarship

University of Nottingham Veterinary School

  • Conducted a research project exploring the relationship between variations in regulatory regions of gbp5, it’s expression levels, and tuberculosis resistance in cattle.
  • Used lab techniques including PCR, DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis.
  • Utilised bioinformatics tools (BLAST, Primer 3) to design DNA primers.

2017-18:

Co-founder of the Sutton Bonington code club

  • Started a club for staff and students in the Nottingham Bioscience campus interested in learning to programme.
  • Gave basic tutorials in Python.

  • Conducted large student surveys and represented the views of students in staff committee meetings during the annual process of course and module review.
2011-14:

Banjo player in folk band ’27 Strings’

  • Formed a 10-member band while in high school
  • Self-published a run of 100 CDs
  • Performed live on BBC Three Counties Radio and held concerts at the Royal Observatory, Brownstock Music Festival, and others.
2008-14:

Member of Cantate Youth Choir

  • Performed at concerts both nationally and internationally.
  • Competed at the 2014 world choir games in Riga and won 2 gold medals.
